Necromunda Cawdor

Cawdor Group

The Cawdor were the second of my Necromunda gangs to be painted. The paint scheme was inspired by movies that make use of strong filters to create a cold, dark atmosphere, movies like Alien III, and Underworld. This involved a number of paint tests to get the colors just right.

The gang was completed in two major waves. The first wave, completed circa 2003, was the box set and a few extras. The second wave (2007-2008) were extensive conversions to represent the hardened, well equipped fighters who emerged. You can see a marked improvement in painting quality from the first batch to the second (although I still take pride in the first batch, especially since they were painted for the tabletop).

However, it was no easy task matching the colors from the first and second waves. Back in 2003 I didn’t keep notes, and the complex original formula is lost to time. I know for a fact, though, that the paints used for the second batch are entirely different from those used in the first! The Cawdor range of models is notorious for being poorly equipped to make use of their close combat skills, so modeling an effective gang is a challenge. The champions have been converted from Bretonnian grail pilgrims and a Mordheim chaos magister. Oh, and the heavy stubber was honored with a gold Kublacon trophy in 2005 for best Sci-Fi single. This one was converted and painted between the two waves.
